#13-SOUND OF PAPER
LAND AND SEA, in collaboration with Wide Awake Editions: THE SOUND OF PAPER a "print" by bay area artist Chris Duncan. This past March Duncan was invited to lecture and create a print at the University of Kansas with its newly coined press Wide Awake Editions. Excited to challenge the notion of what a print is, Chris created a double LP complete with hand-built gate-fold packaging. The records, however, are not 180 gram vinyl, but pieces of heavy weight paper with lines embossed in them for a record player needle to follow the "groove". To play the records one hears white noise with sporadic beats employed by the shifting of the needle on the paper. There are moments of discordance and moments of soft, warm harmony.
